Our History

Opened in 1944 by Aubrey Stokes and a handful of local aviation enthusiasts, the airport was originally called Stokes Airport and operated as a private airfield toward the end of World War II. Eventually, it was acquired by the town of Front Royal, then Warren County, Virginia and is currently managed by the County as a general aviation airport.

The entrance to the airport is guarded by an F-86, originally based out of Martinsburg, West Virginia.  It was brought to the airport in 2001 where it has remained ever since.
